ENDE, FEMALE PAINTER AND SERVANT OF GOD..

"En depintrix et D(e)I aiutrix frater Emeritus et presbiter": En, painter and servant of God. Emeterius, priest and presbiter.

Ende or En is the first Spanish female manuscript illuminator. Her work was documented in a inscription (in the image above). Because of it, she is consider the first female artist in European history.  

She was probably a nun, who worked at the end of the 10th century in the monastery of San Salvador de Tabára, in the mountains of Leon (Spain).

The Beatos are medieval books that contain the "Commentary to the Apocalypse" of Beato 

of Liebana (author). These books are unique in the Hispanic High Middle Ages.
